I learnt a new word and I love the sound of it: kintsukuroi. It is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with seams of gold. Kintsugi repairs the brokenness in a way that makes the container even more beautiful than it was prior to being broken. Not a very common idea in western culture!
Instead of diminishing the bowl’s appeal and appreciation, the “break” offers the container a new sense of its vitality and resilience. The bowl has become more beautiful for having been broken. One can say that the true life of the bowl began the moment it was dropped!
Imagine you are that clay pot: celebrate your flaws and imperfections. Remember that you being you is what makes you uniquely beautiful.
And remember: “The world breaks everyone, then some become strong at the broken places.” Ernest Hemingway
An interesting essay on the art of kintsukuroi can be found in Flickwerk, The Aesthetics of Mended Japanese Ceramics.

I’m pretty sure that I’ve reblogged this before, but its actually one of my favorite posts on tumblr. The idea that something can be more beautiful after being broken is so moving to me. I kind of want one of these someday, or to make my own. It’s an amazing concept, and I love the fact that it’s an artform.
Richard Armitage said to some reporter that Thorin was 5’2”, and it hit me, suddenly, as I was writing “And So, To Bed,” Bella version, that Thorin would be just two inches shorter than I am and my brain locked up for about…well it felt like a day or two in a very happy place, because, Mahal, ::bites fist::
Sometimes my brain has me worry about stupid things, and then sometimes it gives me stuff like this. Thank you, brain. Thank you.
(I love this pic afffghllll god
though the Dwarves in my head have Mark Ruffalo-levels of glorious body fuzz. Also I AM CONFUSED. Weta seems to think that Thorin is 4’10.5” HALP I NEED TO KNOW IF THORIN IS ONLY AN INCH SHORTER THAN ME OR NOT)
Actually Weta’s got all screwy. I have a couple of Hobbit books - the movie guide and visual companion - that say 4 foot 10 and a half. But this interview with Richard has Richard Armitage himself telling us that Thorin Oakenshield was meant to be as tall as Daniel Radcliffe in Real Life or 5’3. He states that this is from the stage directions. And another Richard interview gif I’ve seen going around Tumblr has Richard correcting the reporter and stating Thorin is 5’2. He’s repeated this in a couple of other interviews.
In any case, canon isn’t precise but does say that Thorin is unusually tall for a Dwarf. Thorin IS able to wield Orcrist and we all know it’s an actual Elven sword, not a small dagger that a Hobbit could use as a sword, like say Bilbo and Sting. If Thorin were teeny-tiny, he’d have some serious difficulty wielding that sword, never mind if he’s strong for a Dwarf.
In conclusion, I’m going to stick with Richard’s headcanon. Baby’s got Stephen Colbert-levels of Tolkien Nerdom; I trust him. :P
"Baby’s got Stephen Colbert-levels of Tolkien Nerdom."
Now that is a compliment.
